Thirunelli Temple

Thirunelli Temple in Wayanad is among the premier shrines in the State. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is a calm and serene place that attracts a large number of devotees annually. Situated at the base of the Brahmagiri Hills on the Karnataka border, it is about 30 km from the small village of Mananthavady.
The drive to the temple offers devotees a taste of dense forests, elephant sanctuaries and bamboo forests. Paddy fields surround you on all sides as you make your way to the top. Known as the Kashi of the South, it is said that services done for the dead here ensure eternal peace and salvation for the departed soul. Legend has it that it was Lord Brahma himself who made this temple and blessed the water around the area. Hence the river here is known as Papanashini, which translates to 'the stream that washes away sins'. This river emanates from the heart of Brahmagiri and enchants all who view it. Puthari, Chuttuvilakku, Navarathri, Shivarathri and Sreekrishna Jayanthi are the festivals conducted in this temple.
